Peripheral ViewOCT Mirror
What
Unlike the other projects in this portfolio, this project was entirely conceptual. The project consists of three separate designs on CAD with Solidworks and Zemax for an optical element which would allow a scan of the internal surface area of the entire eye, including regions in the far peripheral area of the eyeball. The three designs include a design enabling an OCT scan of the center region, a design enabling a scan of the mid-peripheral region and a design enabling a scan of the far-peripheral region of the eyeball.
Why
This project was a research project for a BioPhysics Lab on UCLA campus. The project was to create a proof of concept to enable imaging of the far-peripheral region of the internal surface area of a human eyeball to diagnose certain mental health conditions earlier, which are related with a thinning of the nerve tissue in this region of the eye. This is of particular interest to research into early detection of Alzheimers, Parkinson's and Dementia. Due to my skill in both Zemax and Solidworks, and interest in startups I was an ideal candidate to design the product on CAD and interact with vendors to determine the economic viability of establishing an MVP.
How
Due to the high cost of boutique mirror manufacturing and a limited timeframe (3 months), despite the designs being theoretically sound, the cost to manufacture objects in these assemblies within required tolerances showed this endeavor to be unfeasible without a larger quantity of funding than was allocated to this endeavor.
